I bought my Elantra in February 2002 for $1,300 used from a guy who sells undesirable dealer trade-in's.. this was previously owned by a lady who apparently traded it in for a Mazda later on (it was traded in to a Mazda/Dodge dealer about 30 miles away).. I purchased this car with 106,000 miles on the odometer but the car is on it's second engine (the block is stamped with a manufacture date of 5/14/97).. presumably because the timing belt snapped on the old one due to the quirky dual balance shafts this car uses to maintain it's timing. From the outside you would never realize the power this car has, it feels considerably faster and is geared much better than my Protege and its VERY smooth and revvy.. at least from the seat-on-pants dyno.. it is for most practical purposes a 4-door non-turbo DSM.. in the first generation of Elantra they didn't deviate from Mitsubishi's specs (which is a good thing).. oh yeah this car is a 5spd by the way (of course).

Modifications:

Exterior

Maxxim Conflict 15" Wheels With 195/50/15 Falken Tires (lots of wheel gap now) pic

Suspension

KYB GR-2 Struts & Shocks All Around

KYB Strut & Shock Mounts, Boots, Bushings

Planned

Custom Turbocharging 4G67 in car using Eclipse/Talon turbo manifold, turbo, intercooler

Removing Power Steering (maybe)

Isolating minor squeaks in interior, getting rid of "wind leak" sound on drivers side door

Thats it? Thats it.. no huge plans for this car, it's my daily driver once the Protege becomes too good for winter..
